FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How many runways does your airport have?

Gillespie Field has three (3) asphalt runways.

  • Do I have to join a club to fly your planes?

WestWays Aviation collaborates with a local Flight Club. Whomever flies our planes is subjected to a one time joining fee and a monthly fee

for the months the planes are flown. WestWays Aviation reserves the right to waive these fees to customers who book blocks of hours

on its planes and/or Vacation Packages. Ask us about it.

  • How much does a Private Pilot Certificate cost?

Keeping in consideration the national average and local costs, the price range to obtain your Private Pilot Certification can vary from $8,000

USD to $11,000 USD, depending on whether you use a Part 141 Flight School, or a Part 61 Flight School or an Instructor. Both schools use

the same FAA training standards (and same FAA examiners to perform checkrides). The average training period depends on the student

availability and frequency of flight lessons, but is assessed between 9-months and 1-year.

  • What are the requirements to become a pilot?

There are three basic requirements for learning to fly powered aircrafts in the United States: 1.You have to be at least 16 yrs old; 2.You have

to be in good health; 3.You have to be able to read, speak and understand the English language. You can apply for a student pilot certificate if

you are at least 16 yrs old, but in order to apply for a private pilot certificate you have to be at least 17 yrs old. There is no 'maximum' age limit,

because it is health and not age that determines a person's ability to fly well. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires everyone who

wants to become a pilot (or continue to be a pilot) to pass a routine medical exam every two years. This requirement ensures that pilots do not

have medical problems that could interfere with their ability to fly safely. Allowances are made for many physical limitations: for example,

glasses and contact lenses are perfectly accepted. The physical exam can be obtained anytime from one of many FAA-designated physicians.

If you are planning to learn to fly, it is recommended to complete the physical exam early in your flight training to assure that you qualify.
